The Exhibition Leonardo da Vinci Machines in Rome: A journey in a Genius Mind
From April 30th 2009 to April 30th 2010
A superb and exclusive exhibition was inaugurated in Rome, on April 30th 2009, dedicated to the universal genius and his inventions – The Leonardo da Vinci Machines – fully operational are the inventions as them can be touched and set in motion, in this way the visitors can be part of a deep interactive experience of understanding not only the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, but also his physical and mechanical techniques that helped him to create these gorgeous.
The Leonardo da Vinci Machines Exhibition is back in Rome, after the success obtained in Vienna and later on in Florence 2006 at Galleria degli Uffizi (where over 60.000 visitors have decreed that the exhibition has had a remarkable success).

All the machines shown to the exhibition dedicated to Leonardo are made in wood, hand laboured with care and technically skilled by scientists and brilliant Florentine craftsmen, who have been deeply studied the famous writings and drawings “Vinci’s Codes” of the great Tuscan Master. There are also in “Vinci’s Codes” useful materials for the construction of the machines: wood, ropes and glue.In order to have a better visibility of the 45 machines, the exclusive exhibition has been chosen to be hosted inside the historical Palazzo della Cancelleria (Piazza della Cancelleria next to Piazza Campo de’ Fiori) in Rome that will remain open until April 30th 2010. Thanks to its surface of 800 square metres, Palazzo della Cancelleria was considered the best frame-location for this extraordinary exhibition.

The 45 machines invented by Leonardo da Vinci stored in the museum are grouped into 4 main sections characterized by the 4 elements of nature: Water, Air, Earth and Fire which are the basis that make run the machines with different possibility of application, like the conversion of motion or the endless screw. In addition to these 4 sections, we can find as well the Mechanism section, which covers all other inventions by him created.
There are some explanations for each of 5 sections:

1. Water: Hydraulic saw, Cochlea or Archimedean screw, Floats for walking on water, Webbed Glove.
Cochlea or Archimedean screw is a handwork nowadays still useful in agriculture for lifting up the water, for drying the marsh, useful also for fountains and water effects. The Floats for walking on water, have been made of leather bottle filled up with water and Leonardo named them “a new way to walk above water”. Next to the machines mentioned above, on exhibition it will be possible to admire many other inventions that can be touched and tested, in this way the visitors can be part of an unique experience thanks to its various context of history, science, mechanic and physic, invention and innovation.

2. Air: Bicycle ornithopter, Anemometer and Anemoscope, Ornithopter with partially fixed wing (Glider), Wing trial, Vertical ornithopter, Parachute, Bird of the Comedy, Hygrometer.
The Parachute is an useful element thanks to its capacity which “allows to human beings to jump from heights without the risk for being hurt” as Leonardo defined in his Codes.

3. Earth: Automaton (Robot), Rolling mill, Odometer, Column raiser, Revolving crane, Press for oil, Printing machine.
The Automaton (Robot) is a mechanical model of the human body and it’s characterized by the movement given by an ingenious system created with ropes and pulleys that Leonardo has been projected.

4. Fire: Machine gun. Armoured tank, Mourtar fire
The Armoured tank, created in exclusive for the exhibition weight 2 tons and its diameter is cca 6 metres per 3 metres height.

5. The Mechanism section is characterized by some important inventions such as: Ball bearing, Ball bearing for vertical axle, Worm screw – Toothed wheel, Toothed rack (Jack), Transmission of Motion (Chain)
